Introduction: Early modern Japanese historian. Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo. After graduating from Chiba University, completed a doctoral course at Tohoku University Graduate School of Letters. Afterwards, he worked as an academic staff member and assistant at the Historiographical Institute of the University of Tokyo. He was promoted to assistant professor in 1986 and received a doctorate in literature in 1990. He served as a professor at the University of Tokyo from 1993 to 2010, during which time he also served as chairman of the History Research Group.
