Teruyuki Komiya is the 13th director of Ueno Zoo and former president of the Japan Association of Zoos and Aquariums. He also serves as executive director of the Tokyo Zoo Association and representative director (chairman) of the Japan Bird Conservation Federation. He has also served as a member of the Suntory World Bird Fund Steering Committee and as a councilor of the Yamashina Institute for Ornithology.
After graduating from Meiji University's Faculty of Agriculture in 1972, he became an employee of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and was assigned to the Tama Zoological Park, where he worked as a zookeeper in raising Japanese animals. He has received technical research awards for his breeding of black crabs and hares. He has also received the Takasaki Award.
After serving as director of Ueno Zoo, he served as executive director of the Tokyo Zoo Association, and currently serves as chairman of the Japan Bird Conservation Federation. He has widely disseminated the idea of harmony between nature and humans through his books and articles.
