タチバナはミカン科ミカンの属の一種で柑橘類の常緑小高木である。別名はヤマトタチバナ、ニッポンタチバナ。日本固有の柑橘類であり、本州では和歌山県、三重県、山口県、四国地方、九州地方に分布する。近縁種にはコウライタチバナがあり、日本で自生しているものが絶滅危惧IA類に指定されており国の天然記念物となっている。また、静岡県沼津市にも国内北限の自生地がある。
日本では、その実や葉や花は文様や家紋のデザインに用いられ、近代では勲章のデザインにも採用されている。三重県鳥羽市ではヤマトタチバナが市の木に選定されている。中国産柑橘類とは異なるアイソザイムパターンを持つため別種とされる。
特徴としては樹高2メートルから6メートルの枝が緑色で密生し、若い幹には棘がある。また葉は固く楕円形で長さ3センチメートルから6センチメートルになり、濃い緑色で光沢がある。花期は5月〜６月に白い花が咲き、果実は11月〜12月頃実り、滑らかで直径3センチメートルの外見を持つ。
文化においても日本固有の柑橘類であり、その実より葉や花が注目された。マツなどと同様に常緑が「永遠」を喩えるということで喜ばれた。また古事記、日本書紀には垂仁天皇が田道間守を常世の国に遣わして不老不死の力を持った霊薬を持ち帰らせたという話がある。京都御所紫宸殿では「右近橘、左近桜」として橘が植えられている。
家紋としても知られ、「橘紋」はタチバナの実と葉を図案化したものであり、平安時代末期頃から現れ、江戸時代には90家余りの旗本が用いられた。『見聞諸家紋』に記された薬師寺氏や小寺氏が文献上の初見である。
五百円硬貨の裏にもタチバナが描かれている。また日蓮宗の寺紋「井桁に橘・日蓮宗橘」は、開祖の日蓮が井伊氏一族の出身であることに由来するという。
