鎌田茂雄 / Shigeo Kamata
**Pioneer in Buddhist Studies, Elucidator of Kegon Thought**
Shigeo Kamata was a Japanese Buddhist scholar. He made significant contributions to the study of Chinese Buddhist history. He held a Doctor of Letters degree and was an emeritus professor at the University of Tokyo. As a monk, he was known as Keinin.
He was born in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture. After graduating from the Army Cadet School, he entered the preparatory course at Komazawa University. Subsequently, he practiced Zen meditation at Engaku-ji Temple.
After the war, he was employed as an assistant at the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia at the University of Tokyo. He later became a professor. In 1962, he earned his Doctor of Letters degree with a dissertation titled "A Study of the History of Huayan Thought: Centering on Cheng-guan."
He also frequently appeared in the media, serving as a lecturer on NHK's "Kokoro no Jidai" (The Age of the Mind). Additionally, he served as a part-time lecturer at his alma mater, Komazawa University, as well as Tsukuba University, Kyushu University, Osaka University, Toyama University, Taisho University, and others. In 1988, he retired from the University of Tokyo and became an emeritus professor. After that, he taught as a professor at Aichi Gakuin University.
He also worked to promote Buddhist exchanges between Japan and China after the normalization of diplomatic relations and following the Cultural Revolution. Furthermore, after turning 50, he began training at Tendokan, an Aikido dojo near his home, and achieved the 6th dan.
He received the Japanese Association of Indian and Buddhist Studies Prize in 1962, and the Japanese Association for Religious Studies Prize in 1965. In 1976, he also received the 66th Japan Academy Prize.
He authored over 90 single-volume books and more than 500 articles. He also mentored numerous students.
