経歴
愛知県名古屋市生まれ。愛知県立惟信高等学校、名古屋大学卒業後、1962年（昭和37年）に伊藤忠商事に入社。「20世紀の問題を20世紀中に解決させる」という姿勢で大リストラを断行し、不良債権処理や部門整理を行い、黒字化を実現した。2009年度から義務付けられた役員報酬開示制度で、役員報酬が1億1500万円であることが公表された。
2010年（平成22年）に菅直人内閣によって駐中国大使に任命されたが、その直後に尖閣諸島の中国漁船衝突事件が発生し、丹羽は急速に悪化する日中関係の対応に直面した。
