A researcher and entertainment historian of Japan's traditional theater, ``Kabuki.'' Professor emeritus at Chiba University.
Through Kabuki research, I researched the relationship between Japanese culture and performing arts. In recognition of his contribution to Kabuki, which is designated as a national important intangible cultural property, he received the Mainichi Publishing Culture Award Special Award in 1992. He also won the Uchiyama Shinbeiju Memorial Ukiyo-e Encouragement Award.
