Teruyuki Komiya is the 13th director of Ueno Zoo (Ueno Park, Taito-ku, Tokyo) and former president of the Japan Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Since August 2011, he has served as executive director of the Tokyo Zoological Park Society. He also serves as a representative director (chairman) of the Japan Bird Conservation Federation, a councilor of the Yamashina Institute for Ornithology, and a steering committee member of the Suntory World Bird Fund.
After graduating from Meiji University's Faculty of Agriculture in 1972, he became an employee of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and was assigned to the Tama Zoological Park. As a zookeeper, he was in charge of breeding Japanese animals such as bears, wild boars, foxes, hares, geese, storks, and ibises, and received technical research awards for his efforts in breeding Canada geese and hares. In 1978, he received the Tokyo Zoological Park Society's "Takasaki Award for Breeding and Observation."
In 1990, he became the chief zookeeper at Ueno Zoo East Park, and in 1991 he became the permanent director of the Forest Wildlife Research Society (formerly the Hare Research Society). In 1997, he served as the head of the breeding section at Ueno Zoo, and in 1998, he became the head of the breeding section at Tama Zoological Park. Since 2000, he has been the head of the breeding section at Ueno Zoo.
He served as the director of Ueno Zoo from August 1, 2004, and retired from his post on July 31, 2011. Afterwards, he became the executive director of the Tokyo Zoological Park Society. From 2022, he will serve as the chairman of the Japan Bird Conservation Federation.
His books include "A Zoo in the Sky" and "An Eye-Opening Zoo," and he also supervises illustrated encyclopedias and animal programs, as well as lectures at universities and vocational schools. He is also known as an animal paw collector and animal feces photographer.
