Ryohei Yanagihara was a Japanese illustrator, manga artist, animation artist, and essayist, born in Tokyo. He was the great-grandson of Sutezo Nishimura, and Jun Hirota, formerly of the Yomiuri Giants, was his second cousin.
As an illustrator, he published many works, and his Suntory commercial character "Uncle Triss" became very popular. He also produced personal animation works. In 1964, he co-founded the advertising production company Sun-Ad with Ken Kaiko and Hitomi Yamaguchi.
As a manga artist, he serialized "Kyo mo Ichinichi" (Another Day) in the Yomiuri Shimbun evening edition and "Ryo-chan" in the Komei Shimbun, the official newspaper of the Komeito Party. His books include the "Ship Book" series and "The Sea, Ports, and Ships: Japanese Merchant Marine."
Subsequently, many more works were published, and as of 2000, he had been awarded the title of honorary captain by seven shipping companies. Furthermore, the name "Minato Mirai 21" for the city area was decided upon Yanagihara's recommendation. He passed away in 2015 at the age of 84, and a memorial exhibition was held.
