牧野は永沼小一郎を知り、彼から欧米の植物学を学んだ。それから日本中の植物をまとめる夢を抱き、それを自分で行うことを確信するようになる。そして、19歳の時、第2回内国勧業博覧会見物と書籍や顕微鏡購入を目的に上京し、文部省博物局の田中芳男や小野職愨に植物学について聞いたり植物園を見学した。
帰郷してからも植物学の仕事を続け、1884年に再び上京し東京大学理学部（後の帝国大学理科大学）植物学教室に入る。そして矢田部良吉教授のもとで植物学を学んだ。

Tomitaro Makino was a Japanese botanist. Born in Sagawa-cho, Takaoka-gun, Kochi Prefecture. He is famous for naming 2,500 species of plants during his lifetime, and even though he dropped out of elementary school under the old system, he held a Doctor of Science degree.
