Michiko Ishimure is a Japanese writer, born in Amakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture in 1927. Her grandfather and father were stonemasons, and she was given her name with the wish that "the road would be completed." She began her poetic activities from an early age, joined Gan Tanigawa's "Circle Village," and thus began her literary career.
She is known for her writings on Minamata disease, with her most representative work, "Kugai Jodo: Our Minamata Disease," receiving a strong response. She was awarded the Magsaysay Award in 1973. This work had also been selected for the Kumamoto Nichinichi Shimbun Literary Award and the first Oya Soichi Nonfiction Award, but she declined the awards.
She also published a collection of poems and illustrations titled "Sosama no Kusa no Mura." In 2014, she received the Murasaki Shikibu Literary Award, and has received many other awards, including the Avon Women's Award.
