漫画家、絵本作家、詩人のやなせたかしは、1919年に東京府北豊島郡滝野川町生まれ、高知県香美市香北町で育つ。1940年に東京高等工芸学校を卒業後、三越の宣伝部に就職するが、徴兵のため大日本帝国陸軍に入隊し、戦闘には参加しなかった。しかし漫画への情熱は再燃し、終戦後に高知新聞社で編集者として働き、1947年に上京して夫婦となり、三越でグラフィックデザイナーを務りながら漫画活動を行う。独立後の1953年から専業漫画家となり、「アンパンマン」の原作者として有名になる。この他に作曲家の「ミッシェル・カマ」名義も使用し、童話や詩にも取り組むなど、多面的な才能を発揮した。

After graduating from Tokyo High School of Industrial Arts in 1940, he took a job in the advertising department of Mitsukoshi, but was drafted into the Imperial Japanese Army and did not participate in combat. However, his passion for manga was rekindled, and after the end of the war, he worked as an editor at Kochi Shimbun. In 1947, he moved to Tokyo with his wife and began his manga career while working as a graphic designer at Mitsukoshi.
