* 板谷一門は、「振り飛車はよくない」「若いうちは居飛車でいきなさい」という考え方であったため、奨励会に入会した当初は居飛車党であったが、入会から2年間6級のままであったことと、自分の武器は体力だと知ったことから、振り飛車党に転じた。

小林健二と共に藤井システム以前の非常にシステム化された振り飛車定跡を整備した功績がある。
* 名古屋市を中心に、主として東海地方で熱心に普及に努め、地元では非常に人気が高い棋士である。
* 相振り飛車・端歩位取り穴熊といったあまり定跡化が進んでいない分野の著作が多い。

**プロ棋士としての杉本昌隆**
アマチュア時代には、大村和久に世話になっていた。同様に板谷門下であった大村について「アマチュア時代の自分の師匠」と語っている。
* 2012年6月8日、日本将棋連盟非常勤理事に就任、1期2年務めた。
* 2021年から非常勤理事に再就任している。
