漫画家、エッセイスト。江戸や明治の生活風俗を研究し、その知識を活かし、作風は文芸漫画と呼ばれた。
代表作品に『百日紅』『百物語』がある。1984年には、日本漫画家協会賞優秀賞を受賞。また、週刊朝日で奇想天外な回答のコラムを掲載し、読者に楽しませた。
1992年に白血病と診断され、漫画を引退した。しかし、その後も書評委員やNHKでの解説コーナーなどで活躍し、「江戸の旅人 書国漫遊」に収録された。
2005年7月22日、下咽頭癌のため46歳で死去。最晩年に掌編小説集『ごくらくちんみ』『4時のおやつ』を書き残した。

Cartoonist, essayist. He researched the lifestyles and customs of the Edo and Meiji eras, and made use of that knowledge, and his style was called literary manga.
His representative works include ``Myrtle'' and ``Hyaku Monogatari.'' In 1984, he won the Japan Cartoonists Association Award for Excellence. He also published a column with bizarre answers in Weekly Asahi, entertaining readers.
