和田徹 / Toru Wada

**"The master who ignited the passion in batteries"**
Toru Wada, born in 1945, is a former professional baseball player (catcher, infielder, outfielder), coach, and commentator. He was born in Nishi Ward, Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture. He is well-known by his nickname "Bu-chan," and his son is Ken Wada, a former Fuji TV producer.
Wada played at Meisei High School and has experience competing in Koshien. There, he formed a battery with ace Hironobu Horikawa, leading the team. While they lost to Shimonoseki Commercial in the Spring Invitational, they met Shimonoseki Commercial again in the Summer Championship and secured their first victory, avenging their earlier loss. After graduating, he joined the Hanshin Tigers and was expected to be a powerful right-handed batter.
He hit his first home run in a game against Hiroshima in 1965, and on August 21 of the same year, he extended the lead with a two-run home run. During the 1966 Aki spring training camp, he endured rigorous training wearing two rubber coats and diligently lost weight by skipping rice during meals. On August 7 of the same year, he hit his first walk-off home run against Sankei.
From 1966, he competed with Yoshiki Tsuji for the starting catcher position, and in 1967, he started as catcher in 59 games. On May 31, in a game against the Giants, Goro Toi's timely hit in the top of the first inning gave them the lead, securing their second comeback victory.
