野中郁次郎は、経営学者として知られ、一橋大学名誉教授やカリフォルニア大学バークレー校特別名誉教授、日本学士院会員でもありました。組織学会会長も務めました。知識経営の生みの親と呼ばれる人物です。

大学卒業後、工場勤労担当から幹部研修やマーケティングなどを担当し、その間に会社で様々な業務を行いました。しかし、アメリカ留学を決意するようになり、カリフォルニア大学バークレー校経営大学院に進学しました。その際は、留学資金が手元になかったため、会社から50万円の借り入れや友人からのカンパで資金を捻出しました。
アメリカでは妻が働き生活を支え、経営学修士(MBA)取得を経て博士号を取得した。その後は南山大学助教授、教授として活動し、1979年に防衛大学校教授に就任。日本軍の研究成果は『失敗の本質』として出版され、大きな反響を呼びました。
一橋大学で活動する今井賢一教授の紹介で、一橋大学商学部附属産業経営研究施設（現：同大学イノベーション研究センター）教授に就任し、米倉誠一郎助手と親しくなり、ハーバード大学に留学させた。また沼上幹や網倉久永を指導した。

Through the introduction of Professor Kenichi Imai, who was active at Hitotsubashi University, he was appointed professor at the Industrial Management Research Institute, Faculty of Commerce, Hitotsubashi University (now the University's Innovation Research Center), where he became close with assistant Seiichiro Yonekura and sent him to study at Harvard University.
