Graduated from the University of Tokyo, worked at the Geological Survey of the Agency of Industrial Science and Technology, and is now the former director of the Geological Museum, Geological Survey of Japan, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology.
Among his awards, he received the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's Commendation for Science and Technology Award (understanding promotion category) in the field of science and technology in 2008. He is the author of many books and translations, and is a pioneer mineralogist.
