As director of the Rikubetsu Space and Earth Science Museum, he contributes to aurora research and specializes in modeling solar-terrestrial phenomena. He also served as editor-in-chief of the American journals Geophysical Research Letters and Journal of Geophysical Research-Space Physics (internationally renowned academic journals), and served on numerous committees for Japanese and international academic societies. Furthermore, he published many books for the general public and focused on outreach.
