A novelist, essayist, and picture book author. Born in Funabashi City, Chiba Prefecture. After graduating from Waseda University's Faculty of Human Sciences, he became a novelist and has published numerous works.
His awards and titles include the 17th Mizuno Sportswriter Award for Excellence (2006), the 38th Montreal World Film Festival Special Jury Award Grand Prix and Ecumenical Jury Award (2014), and the 2021 Utsunomiya Grand Prize.
His representative works include the novels ``Tsugaru Hyakunen Shokudo'' (2009) and ``Niji no Misaki Cafe'' (2011), and he has also published works in picture books. His non-fiction work is famous for ``The Last Samurai: One-Eyed Champion Kozo Takeda'' (2006).
