生涯
幼少から青年期
セネカはヒスパニア・バエティカ属州の州都コルドバで生まれた。父ルキウスと母ヘルウィアの息子として、兄弟に長男ノウァトゥスと三男メラがいた。生年については不明だが、60歳を過ぎていたことから紀元前1年頃（4年とも）に生まれたと考えられる。
幼少期はコルドバで過ごしたが、12〜13歳のときにローマへ移住し、修辞学や雄弁術を学んだ。哲学を専攻し、新ピタゴラス派のソティオンやストア派のアッタロスらに師事し、後のストア派哲学者としての素地を形成した。
エジプト滞在時期
20年頃、大病を患ったセネカは自殺も考えたとされるが、やがて症状は小康状態に戻った。25年頃、本格的な療養も兼ねて、母ヘルウィアの妹の夫にあたるガイウス・ガレリウスを頼ってエジプトへ向かった。
エジプト滞在中、セネカはアレクサンドリアでユダヤ人の古典や古代エジプト時代から受継がれる思想を学んだ。また、ナイル川を上って上エジプトやイシス神殿を訪れた。これらの経験を元にして「エジプトの地理と宗教典礼について」という書物を記した。
カリグラ・クラウディウス帝在位時期
37年3月、皇帝ティベリウスが死去し、ガイウス・ユリウス・カエサル・アウグストゥス・ゲルマニクス（カリグラ）がローマ皇帝に即位した。セネカはこのとき既に元老院議員となっており、弁論術と哲学者としての知名度により元老院内での存在感を示していった。
しかし、37年10月、カリグラが大病を患ったことやその後の度重なる陰謀が露見したことを境にして、カリグラは残忍な性格を露にし始める。39年、ゲルマニア遠征の最中にカリグラは義理の兄レピドゥスを反逆罪で処刑し、妹2人を追放刑とした。
セネカは、このときも元老院を激しく憎悪するカリグラによって処刑されそうになったが、有力者からの取成しもあって難を逃れた。
41年1月、カリグラはプラエトリアニ（近衛隊）によって殺害され、クラウディウスが皇帝に即位した。追放されていたリウィッラとアグリッピナもローマへの帰国が認められたため、セネカも2人の取成しによって再びローマ政界へ復帰を果たした。
しかし、クラウディウスの皇后メッサリナはリウィッラとセネカが不義の関係にあったとしてセネカを告発した。セネカはこれを否定したが、罪を得たリウィッラは処刑された。

In March 37, Emperor Tiberius died and Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (Caligula) became Roman Emperor. Seneca was already a member of the Senate at this time, and his oratorical skills and reputation as a philosopher made him an influential figure in the Senate.
However, in October 1937, Caligula became seriously ill and his repeated conspiracies were exposed, and Caligula began to show his cruel personality. In AD 39, during an expedition to Germania, Caligula executed his brother-in-law Lepidus for treason and sent his two sisters into exile.
At this time, Seneca was almost executed by Caligula, who had a strong hatred for the Senate, but he escaped through intervention from influential people.
In January 41, Caligula was killed by the Praetorian Guards and Claudius became emperor. Livilla and Agrippina, who had been exiled, were also allowed to return to Rome, and Seneca also returned to Roman politics through their intercession.
