ゴーゴリ / Gogol

**Gogol's trajectory emphasizing the distinction between reality and fiction through his novels**
A novelist and playwright from the Russian Empire. His representative works, which keenly satirize and depict societal corruption and human vulgarity, include "Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka," "Mirgorod," "The Government Inspector," "The Overcoat," and "Dead Souls."
Life
Born in 1809 in Sorochyntsi, Poltava Governorate, into the family of a minor landowner. His father was an amateur playwright who wrote two plays in Ukrainian. In 1818, his younger brother died, leaving Gogol deeply shaken.
From 1821, he attended the Nizhyn Higher School, where he was more passionate about painting and literature than academics. After graduating, he moved to the capital, St. Petersburg, and self-published the epic poem "Hanz Küchelgarten" under the pseudonym V. Alov, but it was harshly criticized, and in despair, he fled abroad.
From 1830, he anonymously published the first part of his first prose work, "Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka," quickly becoming a popular writer. He also published the first part of his historical novel "Hetman," but it remained unfinished.
In 1832, he returned to his hometown to collect folklore and songs, and published the second part of "Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka." From 1833 to 1834, he wrote novels and essays such as "Old World Landowners," and also an unfinished version of the comedy "Marriage."
