1955年生まれ。東京都出身。1980年に東京学芸大学教育学部を卒業し、美術教員として活動しながら絵本作家としての活動も行う。2003年に第13回紙わざ大賞展準大賞を受賞し、2004年には第26回講談社絵本新人賞佳作を受賞した。そして2005年に『おもちのきもち』で第27回講談社絵本新人賞を受賞。これがデビュー作となる。代表作の『だるまさん』シリーズは、たくさんの人に愛され続ける。
