Hiromi Shimada was born in 1953 in Tokyo. In 1972, he graduated from the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Letters, Department of Religious Studies and History of Religion, and in 1978, he completed a master's degree in Religious Studies, Graduate School of Humanities, University of Tokyo.
