**A film director who dreams of "sharing the appeal of Japan through film"**
Film director. Born in Katsushika Ward, Tokyo. After graduating from Yokohama Broadcasting Film Academy (now Japan Institute of the Moving Image), he entered the field as an assistant director for TV dramas. He then gained experience in TV serial dramas and two-hour dramas before transitioning to film, serving as chief assistant director for Directors Company productions and for films by Takashi Ishii and Naoto Takenaka. He became a director in 1995.
His nationally released theatrical film "Cicada Festival Island" received high critical acclaim. He was also responsible for the planning and direction of Japan's first online drama using Ustream, "Bijinzaka" (July 2 - August 6, 2010, JNC).
In 2015, he and Hideharu Okada established "it JAPAN" (a project to promote the appeal of Japan both domestically and internationally through the power of film). "Otomezakura" (screenplay and directed by Hiroyuki Yokoyama) won Best Screenplay and Best Actress awards at the 2017 Monaco International Film Festival, and in 2020, "On That Day" won a second award at the festival.
