Akemi Saito, a native of Kochi Prefecture, is active as an essayist and editor. With diverse experience as a high school teacher and TV writer, she served as a reporter for Weekly Bunshun for 20 years. In 1999, she won the Nihonkai Literary Award Encouragement Award for her novel "Aoto," and began working as a freelancer in 2006.
In their later years, Akemi Saito became close to Zenzo Matsuyama and Hideko Takamine after interviewing them for Weekly Bunshun. She was invited to their home almost daily and shared dinner with them. Takamine was a great comfort to Saito, who lost her mother in 1996. Takamine began to refer to herself as "Kaa-chan" (Mom) to Saito, and it became a natural part of their relationship.
In 2009, she was adopted as the foster daughter of Zenzo Matsuyama and Hideko Takamine. This relationship led her to author many essays and edited books about Takamine. She particularly loved Takamine's cooking, especially Takamine's tamagoyaki (rolled omelet). The title of the first essay Saito wrote about Takamine was "Kaa-chan's Tamagoyaki."
She has authored many books, including "Hideko Takamine's Unforgettable Belongings" and "The Last Japanese." There is also a book summarizing her work with Takamine. She also compiles and supervises books.
