Jiro Tsunoda is a Japanese manga artist and paranormal researcher. He was born in Toyosumi-cho, Shimotani-ku, Tokyo-shi, Tokyo (now Shimotani 1-chome, Taito-ku, Tokyo). He was the second of eight children; his younger brother Takashi Tsunoda is a lutenist, and his youngest brother Hiro Tsunoda is a musician. Manga writer and game creator Bitogo is his son.
As a boy, he was evacuated to Fukushima Prefecture to avoid air raids, and returned to Tokyo in his second year of junior high school after the war ended. He graduated from Shinjuku Ward Yodobashi Junior High School (now Shinjuku Ward Nishi-Shinjuku Junior High School) and Tokyo Metropolitan Aoyama High School.
While in high school, he was watching a pickup baseball game at a field near his home when he realized that the manager of one of the teams was manga artist Keizo Shimada. Tsunoda pushed his way onto the bench and showed Shimada his manga manuscript, compelling him to offer criticism, which led to Tsunoda becoming his apprentice.
In 1955, "Shin Momotaro" was published in Manga Shonen, marking his debut as a manga artist. He befriended other young manga artists who were also submitting to Manga Shonen, and through these connections, he joined the Shin Manga Party. After this, he began frequenting Tokiwaso in Toshima Ward.
In 1958, "Rumi-chan Classroom," serialized in "Ribon," became a hit, and for a while, he mainly drew shojo manga. However, in 1961, he won the 2nd Kodansha Children's Manga Award for "Bara-iro no Umi," serialized in "Nakayoshi." Afterward, he shifted to shonen manga magazines and began drawing gag manga, gaining popularity with works like "Black Dan" and "Ninja Awatemaru."
From 1971, the karate violence manga "Karate Baka Ichidai," based on an original story by Ikki Kajiwara, became a huge hit. Subsequently, he began to draw works in the gekiga style.
Shortly after his debut, Jiro Tsunoda began researching the occult after witnessing an orange UFO near Ryogoku Bridge in Tokyo. Utilizing his knowledge, in 1973 he continuously serialized supernatural horror manga such as "Ushiro no Hyakutaro" and "Horror Newspaper." These works sparked a massive boom and established him as a pioneer of occult manga.
Other representative works include "5-Go no Ryu," an authentic shogi manga, and the "Onnatachi no Uta" (Poems of Women) series, which realistically depicts the destinies of various women.
