Born in Miyagi Prefecture in 1964. He completed his master's degree at the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, University of Tsukuba, and his doctoral degree at the Graduate School of Earth Sciences at the same university in 1993. After serving as an associate researcher in the Research Cooperation Division, Cooperation Department, University of Tsukuba, he joined the Faculty of Education, Ibaraki University, and was promoted from assistant professor to associate professor, and then to professor.
