From 1985 to 2019, he conducted research at Hokkaido University that transcended the boundaries of liberal arts and science, building a model of social interaction that includes emotional functions, and creating a Japanese dialogue processing system. He then returned to Keio University, where he lectured on basic theories of AI and computer science, and pioneered the research field of human-robot interaction.
