English Summary
**Catchphrase**
A poet of despair who cannot be satisfied with reality
Charles-Pierre Baudelaire was a French poet and critic, and the founder of modern French poetry and symbolism. After losing his father, he aspired to become a writer, and was charged with disturbing public morals for his collection of poems, ``Flowers of Evil,'' but artists called him ``the creation of a new horror.'' Other works include Melancholy in Paris.
lifetime
Baudelaire was born in Paris in 1821, and decided to pursue a career in literature in mourning for his father, who died at the age of six. When his mother remarried, he aimed to become a poet and wrote many poems in his 20s. However, his first appearance in the literary world was as an art critic at a government exhibition. He wrote art criticism and advocated the concept of "Modernite," and later translated Edgar Allan Poe.
Known as a dandy, he squandered away his late father's inheritance and was considered unsuitable for a middle-class family. Therefore, at the request of his relatives, he was forced to go on a long-distance voyage, and although he reached the southern tip of Africa, he disembarked midway. After that, I didn't go abroad except for a trip to Belgium.
When ``Flowers of Evil'' was published, he was prosecuted for disturbing public morals, but the second edition was subsequently published as an expanded edition. The content had a tremendous impact, and the despair and boredom that overflowed in the work, which stemmed from the gap between reality and ideals, symbolized the ills of a decadent era. He discovered new possibilities in the genre called prose poetry and continued writing.
Evaluation
Baudelaire was the first poet to suggest the possibilities of the literary space called poetry, and he is called the ``father of modern poetry'' because he had a decisive influence on the people who followed him, including Rimbaud, Verlaine, and Mallarmé.
