ドナルド・キーンは、アメリカ出身の日本学者。コロンビア大学名誉教授として知られる。日本文化研究の第一人者と称され、日本文学の世界的権威となっている。著書に「百代の過客」「日本人の美意識」「日本文学の歴史」（全18巻）などが挙げられる。また、文芸評論家としても多くの著作があるほか、日本文化の欧米への紹介でも活躍している。
受賞歴は、全米文芸評論家賞を始めとした数々であり、2002年に文化功労者に選出され、2008年に文化勲章を受章。位階は従三位に列す。
生まれ故郷のニューヨーク市で貿易商の家庭に生まれたキーンは、その後コロンビア大学に入学し、日本語を学び始める。1942年にはアメリカ海軍日本語学校に志願し、海軍病院に入院中に火野葦平の「土と兵隊」を読む。この作品が初めて読んだ日本文学となる。
その後通訳士官としてハワイの翻訳局に赴任し、日本軍の文書を英語に訳す任務を受ける。中には死亡した兵士から押収された日記もあり、好んで翻訳した。また、アッツ島の戦いに参加する部隊にも同行し、初めての実戦経験となる。
日本文学や文化を深く理解し、それを世界に紹介した先駆者として知られるドナルド・キーン。

Donald Keene is an American Japanese scholar. He is known as a professor emeritus at Columbia University. He is known as a leading researcher on Japanese culture and is a world authority on Japanese literature. His publications include ``Hundred Generations of Passengers'', ``Japanese Aesthetic Sense'', and ``History of Japanese Literature'' (all 18 volumes). In addition to writing many books as a literary critic, he is also active in introducing Japanese culture to the West.
He has received numerous awards including the National Literary Critics Award, was selected as a Person of Cultural Merit in 2002, and received the Order of Culture in 2008. The rank is ranked as junior third rank.
Keene was born into a trading family in his hometown of New York City, and later entered Columbia University and began studying Japanese. In 1942, he applied to the U.S. Navy Japanese Language School and read Ashihei Hino's ``Soil and Soldiers'' while hospitalized in a naval hospital. This work was the first Japanese literature I read.
Afterwards, he was assigned to a translation bureau in Hawaii as an interpreter officer and was tasked with translating Japanese military documents into English. Some of the diaries were confiscated from dead soldiers, and he liked to translate them. He also accompanied the troops participating in the Battle of Attu Island, which was his first experience in combat.
Donald Keene is known as a pioneer who deeply understood Japanese literature and culture and introduced it to the world.
