小説家。部落差別問題について取り組んだ代表作『橋のない川』がある。
小説、評論などを多数著した。また、農村での生活に感化されて、農婦としての実録も書いた。著作に「農婦譚」、「農婦の人権」（1981年）、「農婦の自画像」（1968年）が知られている。
戦時中は軍部賛美の随筆や小説を多数書き、このことが今でないかと言われている。
