Kunihiko Sugawa is a shipping official and author. After graduating from the Navigation Department of the Tokyo Mercantile Marine School, he joined the Osaka Merchant Marine and participated in World War I as a captain. In 1918, he concurrently served as a lecturer at Tokyo Imperial University and was appointed as a professor at the Merchant Marine School, after which he studied abroad in Europe and the United States. His hobby was studying elephants.
His books include ``Sixteen People Living on a Deserted Island.'' This work was serialized in the monthly boys' magazine ``Shonen Club'' and won the Noma Literary Encouragement Award.
