青山剛昌 / Gosho Aoyama
Gosho Aoyama (born June 21, 1963) is a Japanese manga artist. He hails from Daiei Town, Tohaku District, Tottori Prefecture (now Hokuei Town).
A "supernova manga artist" with the talent to bring a fresh breeze to the manga world.
His representative works, "Detective Conan" and "YAIBA," both received the Shogakukan Manga Award and have been adapted into numerous series and animations.
His other works include "Magic Kaito" and "4th Third."
Early Life
Gosho Aoyama was born on June 21, 1963, in Daiei-cho, Tottori Prefecture, the second of four brothers. In elementary school, he wrote about his aspiration to become a "manga artist specializing in private detectives."
Inspired by an art teacher, he attended Nihon University's College of Art and joined the Manga Research Club during his university years. A huge fan of Tetsuya Chiba, he particularly loved "Ore wa Tetsuhei," which led him to try submitting to "Weekly Shonen Magazine." However, he gave up after being told there was an issue with his art style. Afterward, he left Kodansha and contacted "Weekly Shonen Sunday," which he saw at a nearby bookstore. He submitted his manuscript on the spot and debuted in 1986 with "Chotto Mattete," which won the Shogakukan Newcomer Comic Award.
