In 1982, he won an honorable mention in the boys' category at the 11th Shogakukan Newcomer Comic Awards for "Banyu," which became his debut work. It became a long-running manga spanning 16 years, gaining popularity when it was animated in 2004, and the total of 78 volumes that concluded in 2010 held the record for the most volumes in Shonen Sunday Comics history until it was surpassed by "Detective Conan."
