Eiichiro Oda

**Best-selling manga series author**
Eiichiro Oda is a Japanese manga artist. Born January 1, 1975, in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Dropped out of Kyushu Tokai University.
In 1997, he began serializing "ONE PIECE" in "Weekly Shonen Jump" (Shueisha). As of March 2026, the cumulative worldwide circulation of this work has exceeded 600 million copies. Volume 67 also achieved a record-breaking first print run of 4.05 million copies in Japanese publishing history.
Oda, who started drawing at a young age, says he decided to become a manga artist when he saw Fujiko FujioⒶ's "Kaibutsu-kun." He began drawing manga seriously in his second year of junior high school.
Later, his original inspiration for loving pirates was "Vicky the Viking," and during junior high, he set a goal to "draw a pirate manga for Jump" and began accumulating ideas. In his first year of high school, he quit the soccer club and decided to concentrate solely on manga.
In 1992, his short story "WANTED!", submitted under the pen name Tsukihimizuki Kondo, was a runner-up for the Tezuka Award for new artists in "Weekly Shonen Jump." In 1993, "Ikki Yako" won an award in the 104th Hop☆Step Award in October.
Subsequently, while working as an assistant, he drew the one-shot pirate manga "ROMANCE DAWN," which became the prototype for "ONE PIECE." In 1997, he began serializing "ONE PIECE," which depicts the adventures of pirates, in "Weekly Shonen Jump." Despite being his first serialization, it was adapted into an anime in 1999 and became a nationally popular work.
He has also appeared in anime and movies. In 2002, he lent his voice as "Odacchi" (his nickname) in the third animated "ONE PIECE" movie, "ONE PIECE: Chopper Kingdom of Strange Animal Island." In the same year, "CROSS EPOCH," a collaborative work between "ONE PIECE" and Akira Toriyama's "Dragon Ball," was published in the combined April/May 2007 issue of "Weekly Shonen Jump."
Afterward, he continued to serve as executive producer for animated films and theatrical versions, and in 2010, he appeared on Toshio Suzuki's radio program.
Q: What happened?
I was making pirate manga even before I started drawing "ONE PIECE," so that experience proved to be very useful later on.
Q: What are your famous works?
Of course, "ONE PIECE" is famous, and I think that's fine.
