東明館高等学校を経て九州芸術工科大学（2003年に九州大学に統合）入学。大学3年生の頃、漫画家を志す。
1997年、第36回ちばてつや賞ヤング部門にて「上田君の退化論」が期待賞を受賞。
1998年、九州芸術工科大学画像設計学科を卒業。同大学大学院に入学。

2006年、『週刊ヤングジャンプ』9号より「キングダム」の連載を開始。
2012年、NHK BSプレミアムにて「キングダム」がテレビアニメ化される。
2013年、第17回手塚治虫文化賞にて「キングダム」がマンガ大賞を受賞。同年、出身地である基山町にて町内初のふるさと大使に任命される。
2020年、7月にタレントの小島瑠璃子との交際が報じられる。原側は沈黙を貫いたが小島は自身が出演するラジオで交際を認める。9月3日にTwitterで同年3月に離婚していたことを明かした。元妻との間には子供が3人いる。
