漫画家。九州東海大学中退。『週刊少年ジャンプ』で連載中の代表作は、「ONE PIECE」です。同作の累計発行部数は、6億部を突破しています。
本来は油絵が趣味だった父親の影響で漫画家に転向し、『ONE PIECE』では、海賊が好きな理由として『小さなバイキングビッケ』が挙げられるなど、作品の原型となるアイデアを高校生の時から考えてきた。1992年に投稿した短編「WANTED!」が手塚賞に準入選するなど活躍し、1994年には漫画家になるためにアシスタントを務める。
1997年、『ONE PIECE』の連載を開始。同作はアニメ化され国民の人気作品となり、アニメの劇場版にも参加した。また、アニメ映画『ONE PIECE FILM STRONG WORLD』では製作総指揮を務めたことがある。
その後も、連載を休むなどしているが、「ONE PIECE」については、各種メディアの紹介や展覧会の監修をするなど活躍する漫画家の一人である。
