彼は1930年に東京で生まれ、国民学校卒業後、工業学校に進学するが中退し陸軍幼年学校に挑戦します。しかし終戦を迎え、工業学校へ復学して卒業し、人事委員会（後の人事院）に就職します。11年後に退職し、トラック運転手や保険外交員、私立探偵などを経て作家生活に入ります。
彼は多数の作品を発表します中でも海難事故ものと誘拐ものが多くあります。日本中にトラベルミステリーというジャンルを示すきっかけとなったヒット作『寝台特急殺人事件』から全面的にトラベルミステリーに移行する。また、十津川警部や左文字進などのシリーズキャラクターを作り出し、その作品が多くテレビドラマ化されています。
彼は年6度の取材旅行で12社分の小説を書き、そのオリジナル著作は2019年時点で619冊です。累計発行部数は2億部以上です。その後も新刊の刊行が続いています。
2022年3月3日午後5時5分、肝臓がんのため神奈川県内の病院で亡くなります。91歳だった。

However, at the end of the war, he returned to technical school, graduated, and got a job at the Personnel Commission (later the National Personnel Authority). After 11 years, he retired and worked as a truck driver, an insurance salesman, and a private investigator before entering the life of a writer.
He has published a large number of works, including many about marine accidents and kidnappings. The hit series ``Murder on the Sleeper Express'', which introduced the travel mystery genre to the whole of Japan, will be followed by a full-scale shift to travel mysteries. He also created series characters such as Inspector Totsukawa and Susumu Samonji, and many of his works have been made into TV dramas.
He writes novels for 12 companies during his research trips six times a year, and as of 2019, he has 619 original works. The cumulative circulation is over 200 million copies. Since then, new publications have continued to be published.
