樺山紘一は1941年に東京都で生まれた。幼少期は内務官僚の父の転勤に伴って、上海や仙台を転々とした。東京大学文学部西洋史学科に入学し、1965年卒業後、同大学院人文科学研究科で修士課程を修了した。1969年に京都大学人文科学研究所助手に採用され、1976年に東京大学文学部助教授に就任。1990年に同教授に昇格し、1998年からは文学部長を務めた。その後は国立西洋美術館館長や印刷博物館館長などを歴任。現在は渋沢栄一記念財団理事長。
作品の一つである『情報の文化史』により1989年に電気通信普及財団賞を受賞し、『歴史の歴史』により2015年には毎日出版文化賞（人文・社会部門）を獲得。2024年に瑞宝中綬章が贈られた。

Koichi Kabayama was born in Tokyo in 1941. During his childhood, he moved around to Shanghai and Sendai due to the transfer of his father, a Home Affairs bureaucrat. After entering the Department of Western History at the Faculty of Letters at the University of Tokyo and graduating in 1965, he completed a master's degree at the same Graduate School of Humanities. In 1969, he was hired as an assistant at the Institute of Humanities, Kyoto University, and in 1976, he became an assistant professor at the Faculty of Letters, the University of Tokyo. He was promoted to professor in 1990 and served as dean of literature from 1998. After that, he held various positions including the Director of the National Museum of Western Art and the Printing Museum. Currently chairman of the Shibusawa Eiichi Memorial Foundation.
One of his works, ``Cultural History of Information,'' won the Telecommunications Promotion Foundation Award in 1989, and in 2015, ``History of History'' won the Mainichi Publishing Culture Award (Humanities and Society Category). In 2024, he was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure.
