Physician and medical scientist Shinya Yamanaka is professor and honorary director of the iPS Cell Research Institute at Kyoto University. He won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and established the technology for producing induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells).
**From researchers to clinicians**
Yamanaka chose to become an orthopedic surgeon because injuries were common during his student days, including breaking bones more than 10 times while playing judo and rugby. However, during the training, he was sometimes insulted by his instructor, and was ridiculed by those around him as ``resistant'' and ``jamanaka'', which made him realize that he was ``not cut out for it.'' He was in charge of a female patient with severe rheumatoid arthritis, and was shocked to see the patient's joints deformed, which led him to aspire to become a researcher.
**iPS cell research**
Yamanaka retired from the hospital, entered Osaka City University Graduate School, and began research under the guidance of lecturer Katsuyuki Miura. After obtaining his doctorate (medicine) degree, he engaged in research thinking about how he could do research three times as much as others, and studied abroad as a postdoctoral researcher at the Gladstone Institute at the University of California, San Francisco, where he applied to various open positions in scientific journals and was accepted. Started iPS cell research under the guidance of Professor Thomas Inerarity.
