鎌田 茂雄(かまた しげお)は日本の仏教学者。中国仏教史研究に多大な業績があります。学位は文学博士で、東京大学名誉教授です。僧侶としては慧忍と呼ばれていました。
彼は神奈川県鎌倉市で生まれました。陸軍幼年学校を卒業し、次に駒澤大学予科に入学しました。その後は円覚寺で参禅しています。
戦後、彼は東京大学東洋文化研究所の助手に採用されました。そして、後に教授になりました。1962年に『華厳思想史研究:澄観を中心として』という論文を提出して文学博士号を取得しました。
彼はまたメディアへの出演も多く、NHKの「こころの時代」で講師を務めました。また、彼は母校の駒澤大学や筑波大学、九州大学、大阪大学、富山大学、大正大学などで非常勤講師を兼任しました。1988年に東京大学を退官し、名誉教授となりました。その後は愛知学院大学教授として教鞭をとりました。
彼はまた中国との国交正常化後文化大革命後の日中仏教交流の普及に努めました。また、彼は50歳以上になったら自宅近くの合気道場・天道館で稽古を始めて6段になります。
彼は、1962年に日本印度学仏教学会賞、1965年に日本宗教学会賞を受賞しました。また、1976年には第66回日本学士院賞も受賞しました。

Shigeo Kamata is a Japanese Buddhist scholar. He has made significant achievements in researching the history of Chinese Buddhism. His degree is Doctor of Letters and he is Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo. As a monk, he was called Keinin.
He was born in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture. After graduating from the Army Infantry School, I entered Komazawa University Preparatory Course. After that, I practiced Zen at Engakuji Temple.
After the war, he was hired as an assistant at the Institute of Oriental Culture at the University of Tokyo. And later became a professor. In 1962, he submitted a thesis titled ``Research on the History of Huayan Thought: Focusing on Chongkan'' and received a doctorate in literature.
He also frequently appears in the media and served as a lecturer on NHK's "Kokoro no Jidai." He also served as a part-time lecturer at his alma mater, Komazawa University, Tsukuba University, Kyushu University, Osaka University, Toyama University, Taisho University, and other universities. He retired from the University of Tokyo in 1988 and became professor emeritus. After that, he taught as a professor at Aichi Gakuin University.
He also worked to popularize Sino-Japanese Buddhist exchanges after the Cultural Revolution after the normalization of diplomatic relations with China. Also, when he turned 50 years old, he started training at Tendokan, an Aiki dojo near his home, and became 6th Dan.
He received the Japan Society for Indology and Buddhism Award in 1962 and the Japan Society for Religious Studies Award in 1965. It also received the 66th Japan Academy Prize in 1976.
