専門は日本思想史（日本倫理思想史）。東京大学名誉教授。日本学士院会員。位階は従四位。
1921年に石川県金沢市で生まれる。旧制水戸中学・旧制水戸高等学校を経て、1944年東京帝国大学文学部倫理学科卒業。和辻哲郎に師事した。茨城大学助教授、1965年に東京大学文学部助教授、1971年に教授になる。1982年定年退官し、名誉教授となる。1996年に勲三等旭日中綬章を受ける。2000年に逝去し、死没日付で従四位に叙された。
和辻哲郎の和辻倫理学を継承し、日本文化での「美と倫理」を考究した。著作集全6巻がある。

His specialty is the history of Japanese thought (history of Japanese ethical thought). Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo. Member of the Japan Academy. His rank is Jushii.
Born in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture in 1921. After attending the old Mito Junior High School and Mito High School, he graduated from the Department of Ethics, Faculty of Letters, Tokyo Imperial University in 1944. Studied under Tetsuro Watsuji. Became assistant professor at Ibaraki University, then assistant professor at the Faculty of Letters at the University of Tokyo in 1965, and professor in 1971. He retired in 1982 and became a professor emeritus. In 1996, he received the Order of the Rising Sun, Third Class. He passed away in 2000 and was awarded the rank of Junior Fourth Rank at the date of his death.
Inheriting Watsuji Tetsuro's Watsuji Ethics, he investigated "beauty and ethics" in Japanese culture. There are 6 volumes of works.
