上橋菜穂子は、日本の児童文学作家、ファンタジー作家、SF作家、文化人類学者。代表作として『精霊の守り人』や『鹿の王』が知られています。
彼女は東京都生まれで、父親は洋画家の上橋薫です。香蘭女学校を卒業後、立教大学文学部史学科に進みました。その後は女子栄養大学助手、武蔵野女子短期大学非常勤講師などを経て、現在は特任教授として教育学部児童教育学科で児童文学を担当しています。
幼少の頃から多くの民話を聞いて成長し、物語を作ることを目指していたということです。父親から『西遊記』や『水滸伝』、母親から『モモちゃんとプー』などを読んでいました。小学校5・6年生のときには野尻湖での化石発見について文章を書く自由研究でした。
東京都品川区の香蘭女学校で中高一貫教育を受けたり、ローズマリー・サトクリフやトールキンの作品に影響を受けたりしていました。高校生のときには英国へ学習旅行に行き、日本文化人類学会会員であるシオドーラ・クローバーの『イシ、二つの世界を生きたインディアンの物語』を読んでいました。
大学院で文化人類学を学び、パトリシア・ライトソンのファンタジー『星に叫ぶ岩ナルガン』に出会って影響を受けました。アボリジニの研究に興味があり、オーストラリアでフィールドワークを行い、日本文化を小学校で教えていました。
1989年に『精霊の木』で児童文学作家としてデビューし、1992年には日本児童文学者協会新人賞を受賞しました。1996年に『精霊の守り人』を発表してからは独自の異世界を舞台にしたハイ・ファンタジー作品を書きました。同作で野間児童文芸新人賞や産経児童出版文化賞を獲得しています。

Nahoko Uehashi is a Japanese children's literature author, fantasy author, science fiction author, and cultural anthropologist. His representative works include ``Guardian of the Spirit'' and ``The Deer King.''
She was born in Tokyo, and her father is Kaoru Uehashi, a Western painter. After graduating from Koran Girls' School, she entered the Department of History, Faculty of Letters, Rikkyo University. After that, she worked as an assistant at Women's Nutrition University and as a part-time lecturer at Musashino Women's Junior College, and is currently a specially appointed professor in charge of children's literature in the Department of Child Education, Faculty of Education.
He grew up listening to many folk tales from an early age, and his goal was to create stories. My father read ``Journey to the West'' and ``Suikoden,'' and my mother read ``Momo-chan and Pooh.'' When I was in the 5th and 6th grade of elementary school, I did an independent research project where I wrote an article about fossil discoveries at Lake Nojiri.
She received a junior high and high school education at Koran Girls' School in Shinagawa, Tokyo, and was influenced by the works of Rosemary Sutcliffe and Tolkien. When I was in high school, I went on a study trip to England and read ``Ishi, The Story of an Indian Who Lived in Two Worlds'' by Shiodora Clover, a member of the Japanese Society of Cultural Anthropology.
I studied cultural anthropology in graduate school and was influenced by Patricia Wrightson's fantasy ``Nargan, the Rock Who Screams to the Stars''. I am interested in Aboriginal research and have done fieldwork in Australia and taught Japanese culture at elementary schools.
He made his debut as a children's literature author in 1989 with ``The Spirit Tree,'' and won the Japan Children's Writers Association's Newcomer's Award in 1992. After releasing ``Guardian of the Spirit'' in 1996, I wrote high fantasy works set in unique parallel worlds. This work won the Noma Children's Literature Newcomer Award and the Sankei Children's Publishing Culture Award.
