Novelist. Born in Shingu City, Wakayama Prefecture. Born in a discriminated against buraku community, he created numerous works set in the buraku community, creating a unique indigenous world known as the ``Kishu Kumano Saga.''
His major works include ``Karekinada'' and ``A Thousand Years of Pleasure.'' In 1976, he won the 74th Akutagawa Prize for ``Misaki,'' making him the first postwar winner to receive the award.
