鶴見和子 / Kazuko Tsurumi

**"A pioneer who transformed people's lives and led sociology into a new era"**
Specializing in international relations and comparative sociology, she was the first to teach international relations in Japan. She also contributed to the work of historical researchers such as Minakata Kumagusu and Yanagita Kunio.
As a sociologist, she published numerous works on postwar Japanese daily life and women's issues, advocating for "the study of groups that include oneself." She co-founded the "Shiso no Kagaku" (Science of Thought) collective, and there was a period when she became a member of the Communist Party. In the 1950s, she was involved in the activities of the "Nihon Sakubun no Kai" (Japan Composition Society). She also formed a group called "Seikatsu o Tsuzuru Kai" (Life Writing Association) and authored "Haha no Rekishi" (History of Mothers) and "Nakama no Naka no Ren'ai" (Love Among Friends).
She also served as a visiting professor at the University of Toronto and Princeton University, and established the "Shiso no Boken Group" (Adventures in Thought Group) at the Hachioji University Seminar House. She was once a candidate for minister at the Japanese Mission to the United Nations. Her involvement in the founding of the "Shiso no Kagaku" collective also led to a period when she joined the Communist Party.
In her later years, despite being in a wheelchair, she published collected works and interview compilations, and passed away at the age of 88 from colon cancer in 2006.
