新潟県三島郡寺泊町野積（現：長岡市）生まれ。寺泊町立野積小学校、寺泊町立寺泊中学校、新潟県立長岡高等学校、昭和大学医学部卒業。1991年3月、同大学院修了。
主な業績
脳を自分で成長させるために必要な概念「脳番地」を発案。
光で脳機能を計測する近赤外線分光法を用いた光脳機能計測法を最初に実現した第一発見者で、fNIRSの生みの親である。
