As a scholar of English literature, he specialized in the American literary figure Henry James and published many works. He was also highly skilled at interpreting English texts, and was in charge of a corner for an English youth magazine. He published ``Eibun Kaidokujutsu,'' which is said to be the best-selling book in Iwanami Shoten's contemporary library.
He has written many practical books such as ``Reading the Mind in English'' and ``How to Read English Sentences.'' He also researches the works of Somerset Maugham and has written a book on the subject.
