Hideho Kindaichi is a Japanese linguist. His areas of expertise include Japanese language education, linguistic behavior, and semantics. He is a Professor Emeritus at the Faculty of Foreign Studies at Kyorin University and a Visiting Professor at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies. He also serves as the director of the Yamanashi Prefectural Library.
Born in Suginami Ward, Tokyo, after graduating from Sophia University, he dedicated himself to reading instead of seeking employment, and developed an aspiration to study abroad. In 1983, he specialized in Japanese linguistics at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies Graduate School, and subsequently, after serving as a visiting researcher at Dalian University of Foreign Languages and Harvard University, he was appointed as a professor at Kyorin University.
From around 2002, his media appearances increased, and he gained recognition as a judge on the TV program "Namaritei." He is active in broadly communicating the charm of the Japanese language. He also became the third president of "Suginami Regional University."
Family
His grandfather was the linguist Kyosuke Kindaichi, his father was the Japanese language scholar Haruhiko Kindaichi, and his older sister is golf writer Minako Tanaka. His older brother is the Russian language scholar Masumi Kindaichi.
