Takamori Saigo was a Japanese politician and military officer from the end of the Edo period to the early Meiji period. He was a low-ranking samurai in the Satsuma Domain of Satsuma Province, but he caught the attention of Nariakira Shimazu, the lord of the domain, and was selected to become a daimyo. Afterwards, he returned to work in the new government and served concurrently as army general and commander of the Royal Guards. He also proposed that he go to Korea as an envoy to deal with the issue of restoring diplomatic relations with Korea, leading to conflict with Okubo and others who had returned to Japan. However, due to the political upheaval that followed, he decided to quit his job and return to Kagoshima to devote himself to teaching at a private school. Although he became a leader during the Seinan Rebellion, he was defeated and committed suicide in Shiroyama, but his honor was restored more than ten years after his death, and his rank was raised to Sansho Sanmi.
