小説家としての経歴は、神奈川大学卒業後、証券系の財団法人で勤務し、横浜から東京まで通うのがつらく、会社のそばにアパートを借りて少女小説を書き始めた。その後、「プレミアム・プールの日々」でコバルト・ノベル大賞佳作を受賞。ペンネームの「山本」は友人の名前に、「文緒」は槇村さとるの短編漫画の主人公の名前に由来し、中性さを出したかったという。
1992年に一般文芸へシフトし、作品のタイトルも自分で決めるようになった。代表作として「パイナップルの彼方」や「ブルーもしくはブルー」を挙げることができる。2000年には「プラナリア」で直木賞を受賞。
後年の作品に『絶対泣かない』があり、2011年に長野県北佐久郡軽井沢町へ移住し、2019年に「自転しながら公転する」という小説で中央公論文芸賞を受賞した。その後2021年春頃より体調を崩し、ステージ4bの膵臓癌と診断され余命4か月の宣告を受け、同年10月13日に死去した。

As for her career as a novelist, after graduating from Kanagawa University, she worked at a securities foundation, and found it difficult to commute from Yokohama to Tokyo, so she rented an apartment near her company and began writing girls' novels. After that, he won the Cobalt Novel Award Honorable Mention for ``Premium Pool Days''. The pen name ``Yamamoto'' comes from the name of a friend, and ``Fumio'' comes from the name of the main character in Satoru Makimura's short manga, and he wanted to convey neutrality.
In 1992, he shifted to general literature and began deciding the titles of his works himself. His representative works include ``Beyond the Pineapple'' and ``Blue or Blue.'' In 2000, he won the Naoki Prize for ``Planaria.''
One of his later works was ``Zettai no Cry'', and in 2011 he moved to Karuizawa-cho, Kitasaku-gun, Nagano Prefecture, and in 2019 won the Chuo Kosho Shigei Award for the novel ``Revolving While Rotating.''
