鹿児島県南種子町出身。父は南種子町長を務めた柳田長谷男。「理科雄」は本名で、彼の生まれる2か月前、ユーリイ・ガガーリンが世界初の宇宙飛行に成功していることから、この名前が付けられたという。
幼少の頃より科学者を志していたが、中学時代には『ウルトラマン』や『仮面ライダー』のような特撮番組を見た際、本気でニュース番組だと思っていた少年でもあった。京都大学に通い、その後東京大学に入学したものの、カリキュラムの理不尽さに失望し、中退。学習塾講師として働き、その魅力に取り付かれ本格的に進むことを決意する。
中学生時代からの友人が宝島社の編集者だったことから、中学時代の議論を元にした『空想科学読本』を1996年に出版。60万部以上を売り上げるベストセラーとなったが、経営していた学習塾は倒産してしまった。
その後は高校時代からの友人が経営する学習塾で講師を務めながら続編の執筆を続け、2000年から専業作家になる。空想科学研究所の設立に伴い主任研究員にもなっている。
大学では非常勤として教鞭をとり、その際は『ウルトラマン』や怪獣の戦いのシーンで発生するエネルギーの算出などをテーマにする。
酒好きであり、自分が好きな酒についても具体的に語っている。またプロレスも大好きで、『空想科学読本』シリーズではジャイアント馬場を頻繁に登場させている。
